Golf Range Finders Makes Finding Pin Placement Yardages Easy To Navigate!

The Callaway LR 550 Laser Rangefinder provides quick and accurate distance measurement up to 550 yards. It features first target technology which displays the range to the nearest target among multiple results obtained with a single measurement.  Best used when measuring the distance to a pin on a green with woods in the back ground. It has a 6x magnification at distances greater than 100 yards accuracy,  and is accurate to within 5 yards.

Technically speaking, it is the budget model of the Callaway line of golf range finders. It doesn’t appear to lack much in terms of features.  In fact, despite being scaled back in some functions,  its low price tag has been found by the Callaway Rangefinder LR550 Review to address the constant complaints that the LR1200 model was too pricey to be worthwhile. There is $200 difference between the two models.

I’ve had the yellow LR550 for two full seasons now and I have never failed to get an accurate yardage reading, from bunkers, water edges, trees, even grass or hills behind pins.  It seem to track perfectly, and I have had  no problems with cloudy weather conditions, however it doesn’t work well when there is fog.

The other great benefit to this over a GPS is the ability to take it to the driving range and find distances to pins. Despite being branded as a woman’s sports model, the LR550 really has nothing gender specific about it, and male golfers will no doubt appreciate all of its features as much as women do.

There are a couple of small minor limitations to the LR550 Callaway Laser Range Finder.  Most noticeably is the range factor where the LR550 offers a 550 yards top range as opposed to the 1,100 yards  of the LR1200.  Likewise it only has a 6x magnification capability that  while respectable,  is not as good as the 7x which some other models offer. Lastly, the 20-second scan mode of the LR550 vs LR1200 is only 8 seconds when tested.

None of the limitations that were studied in the Callaway Rangefinder LR550 review limit, shouldn’t be the reason for the lower price tag. They are sacrifices that many feel are worth being made, because it does offer many of the same features and functions of the LR1200.  It still has the one touch controls, LCD back light, and first target priority mode which can really ease picking out the flag amidst a background of trees.  Among the cheaper rangefinders in the marketplace that are available, the LR550 is markedly set apart by merit of its accuracy, effectiveness and distinguished features. The LR550 gains praise for offering so many features at such a low price tag.

Maps of golf courses have to be bought through subscription or individually at an additional cost.  If your a regular player this can be time consuming or an expensive exercise.  Especially if you play at many various golf courses. Another negative in terms of use for the GPS Range Finders is that if the weather is cloudy, or there are too many trees on the golf course, the GPS might not be able to connect to the satellite. You’ll  either get and inaccurate reading or no reading at all.

Essentially at the end of the day, you have to decide for yourself what the best golf range finder for your needs would be.  Personally speaking though,  fiddling about on the golf course with gadgets might just take my golf game longer to play. However,  I am no technophile so I rest my case,  the decision is yours for which one would best for your golf game.

You also observed where the pin placements of the day were by writing it down. You marked down locations on the greens, by showing it on a graph. If it’s on a hill, swale or what kind of breaks to the hole when putting from different locations on the green and its various angles. Where is the flat part of the green or safest place to hit the ball to. There was a combination of both guess work and knowing your player’s skill level.

While there are golf traditionalist who considers the intervention of technology such as golf range finders or GPS systems to be some kind of interference and sacrilege to the integral challenge of the game of golf. There are many others who are more interested in perfecting their physical skills, and taking out the guesswork that causes frustration. Why penalize yourself a stroke because of an unseen water hazard or experience the maddening irritation of being in a sand trap if a better calculation can avoid all of these obstacles.

There are those who would argue that one’s mental and physical ability is the true elements of what counts the most in the game of golf, and not one’s ability to play guessing games with the golf course architecture.

Spalding Is Developing More Dimples For Better Results In Your Golf Swing Mechanics!

Manufacturers have experimented with club design for many years, enlarging the sweet spot and introducing perimeter weighting designed to lessen the twisting at impact and give the golfer more opportunity to hit from the center sweet spot.

For the most part these innovations have been reached through trial and error, using computer aided design systems. A dimensional diagram of different golf club design models does describe exactly how the club head rotates through impact and where the center of gravity is as the ball and club head meet at that moment of impact.

Another computer model is that of the golf balls trajectory. Taking into consideration a variety of launch angle conditions, some of which may seem like petty issues but which are of major concern to the devoted golfer. For instance, grass was traditionally thought to interfere with a golf balls launch and slow its release from the club head. What actually was found that when the grass comes between the golf ball and the club face, it is actually slippery enough to assist in the golf balls launch.

This wasn’t originally thought of in aerodynamics. According to the laws of aerodynamics, a smooth surface provides the least amount of wind resistance.  It stands to reason therefore that a smooth-surfaced ball would fly faster and farther through the air than one with a rough surface.  If this was true, golf balls would cost a dime a dozen.

However, with aerodynamic properties similar to the wing of an airplane, golf balls are perhaps the most  complexive round spheres in sports today. A golf balls performance is largely determined by its dimple patterns, a feature that was developed through observation and has evolved over time.

Earliest golf balls were made of wood.  Seeking a softer feel, the Scottish founders of the game stuffed leather pouches with boiled feathers.  Hard rubber balls known as gutta-perchas came into the game about 1848. When players noticed that nicks and marks on the surface of the smooth balls caused them to fly farther,  golf ball makers began to mold them with indented or raised surface patterns.

With the introduction of the wound golf ball at the turn of the century, a rubber core with elongated rubber bands wound around it with a balata cover.  Dimples became a part of the construction. In the 1950s, the average number of dimples was 336. Today, golf balls can have as many as 500 dimples covering more than 70 percent of the surface. Dimple designs have become quite sophisticated, and patterns are now made of complexive  geometric construction designs.

Symmetry is a key element because it ensures that no matter how the golf ball is spinning, it will fly straight. Dimples are in essence one of man’s attempts to manage air, and the golf ball is considered a triumph of design. A golf ball with no dimples will travel 130 yards and behave much like a bullet, with a straight trajectory. A dimpled golf ball on the other hand, can travel at least 280 yards, rising through the air because of its lift. Dimple patterns work with the golf balls spinning motion to move the ball through the air. The backspin on the golf ball is determined by its construction and the club head angle (degree of loft), and is a crucial contributing factor to the golf balls trajectory or flight pattern.

Golf ball designers at Spalding,  hit on the concept that one way to fit more dimples was to increase the surface area. Because the U.S.G.A. has a standard that golf balls can be no smaller than 1.68 inches in diameter but, no restrictions on how large a golf ball can be, the solution was quite obvious.

Produce a bigger golf ball. A larger mass will move through the air more slowly, and a debate has ensued over claims of increased distance made by manufacturers of oversize balls.  Spalding, contends that the increased drag created by the larger ball is compensated for by the increased number of dimples on its surface, which help it too fly farther.  Spalding markets the Magna line of oversize golf balls.

Larger golf balls provide no advantage but, rather have greater air resistance. Beginners may get more distance from an oversized golf ball, it’s believed to be a breakthrough in design that manufacturers have created a larger golf ball that performs much the same way as the traditional ones.

The downswing and moment of impact were only part of the picture. Using a new testing system designed for Indoor Testing Range (ITR), the first of its  kind  at the U.S.G.A.  Instead of using wind tunnels which wasn’t very accurate they now can actually shoot the golf ball out of a pressurized air gun and control every aspect of the testing.  Measurements of spin rates and velocity are much more accurately recorded. Those properties are practically an obsession with golf ball designers, so access to the ITR is being sought out by several golf ball manufacturers today.

Computers can now actually determine the lift and drag properties, and predict how far a particular golf ball will travel on the fairways. By taking these measurements  it can now predict how the golf ball will fly under any variety of launching conditions.

What the U.S.G.A. is now studying is kinematics.  Specifically the kinematics of the golf swing mechanics, referring to the dynamic studies of motion and time.  While biomechanical studies of athletes are nothing new, studies have been done on skiers, swimmers, runners, and golfers have long been the subjects of such analysis.

Defining the most mysterious factor of all is the human behavior in learning the golf swing mechanics. We can stop the computer at any point and see where the golfers body is in relationship to where the golf club is. This helps to understand the forces involved: How fast does the club head accelerate?  What’s the torque on the club as the swing comes down in to the impact area? It can then help to determine what will happen next if we change the variables, and work with the golfer to see how the adjustments feel.

While the implications of the biomechanic studies are obvious. The P.G.A. and several other golf instructor organizations have already inquired about using this technology to demonstrate to golfers exactly where in that six to seven second motion of their golf swing mechanics they’re actually going wrong.

Correcting a golfers swing is not the intentions of the U.S.G.A. What business is it of the U.S.G.A. to teach people how to golf swing? The studies  will help those in the field of sports medicine and injuries understand better what the body goes through in various activities, and what the forces of inertia results with regards to the joints and muscles.

They can then determine what parts of the body need to be exercised to avoid undue strain on the joints, or what should be done differently to prevent injuries from happening. Great news for sports medicine but, there’s got to be some value to the designers struggling to fulfill the demands of the weekend golfers.

In the long run what this will lead to is customizing golf clubs for particular types of buyers and the particular skill levels of each golfer. Designers will use the mathematical computer models to design golf clubs for a specific type of golfer, by incorporating such factors as the golfers body type and movement. The buying public will be able to quickly match themselves to a new set of  golf clubs.

Manufacturers admit that for all of their efforts,  they’re really in the business of selling hope. We sell the promise of performance. If there is something new we can bring out to the marketplace that instills more confidence, then it’s worth the price.  Customized golf equipment can help a golfer too play better, however, absolutely nothing is going to increase your distance,  your club-head velocity,  or anything else that requires skill and confidence.

Nevertheless, in the wake of the scientific revolution in golf, the U.S.G.A. has been inundated with requests for information from designers. With the new understanding of the golf balls and golf clubs that have been created by using the latest technology in engineering designs.

The golfer will eventually make their way onto the golf course with brand new state of the art golf equipment. However, the work is far from over with and becoming overly excited about the new role of science in the world of golf still has a long way to master. This game has been played for hundreds of years,  and for hundreds of years golfers have sought out the perfect golf ball and the perfect golf club.  If  it hasn’t been discovered by now, then it’s probally not out there.

What it comes down to is the confidence level. If you bought a brand new golf club and immediately have success with  this  new golf club. What happens next, and this has happened  to all of us in the past. You  start believing that it’s going to improve your golf swing, and you start feeling your confidence level  beginning to soar.  Your now focused and believing about this great new golf club you have, and what your going to be able to do with it.  That your going to be able to shave off strokes by placing the golf ball in areas that you’ve never been there before.  So your brain is not interfering with what your body is actually doing, and you now begin swinging and hitting the cover off the golf ball.

As for golf club shafts, there is a definite trend toward carbon graphite. One way to get a good energy transfer between the golf swing and the golf ball is to have a good whip in the shaft. Carbon graphite works very well. It’s a very stiff material, and it can be tailored very simply to give whipishness or stiffness, depending on the flexibility and strength of the golfer.

These technical changes in golf club designs, has now become ever fast changing in the golf industry. Product development is critical, as each vendor has its own demands for pricing, shapes, materials, weights, hardness, stability, center of gravity, and other specifications for their club heads.

When I first started playing I was given hand me down golf clubs by my father.  I played with these clubs throughout my college years.  Couldn’t afford to buy new clubs until after I got married.  I was playing all of the time in the  high 70′s through college but,  when I bought my first set of Wilson  1200′s I did  see immediate improvement.  I was able to at least shave off  another 4 – 5 strokes. I now was able to compete not only at my own golf club but,  also get involved in local district tournaments.  I still play with Wilson golf clubs but,  I had to adjust my clubs  as I got older.  I no longer play with steel shafts but, with graphite lights.   I extended my shafts from 44′ to 46” giving me longer extensions on the golf swing.  I  still have lost some distance on my drives but,  it’s enough on most holes to set me up nicely on my second shots to the green.

The value of having something fit to you is indeed a major benefit in improving your golf swing. You don’t want to have your body adjusted to the golf club but,  instead have your golf club built to your size and your height.  Having to adjust yourself to the golf club is probably the worst thing that you can do.  Your ingraining so many bad swing flaws because your having to overcompensate on your height, weight, and strength.

Probably the easiest thing you can do with custom built clubs is the control factor. With the proper setup of your golf clubs you have no bad  movement with them.  Instead you have properly balanced clubs,  the correct shaft, weight,  correct shaft composite ( steel, graphite or hybrid.),  shock absorbers built in,  alignment of the club head (closed or open),  and  the proper loft and lie. ( degrees of the club face).

Now when you mishit shots their still hit with authority and they go much straighter.  I believe that is the biggest difference,  because as amateurs or professionals we don’t hit perfect shots all of the time.  The Human Factor must be accounted for. Most of our golf shots will be mishits.  With these misses it accentuates it even more when the golf club isn’t set up perfect for you.  You don’t have the right shaft,  the right loft and lie,  all of this  becomes factors into your golf swing including the correct grip size.

When you have a set that is made for you. It’s amazing how much better you feel about yourself mentally, and you do play better golf without trying.  It seems that the Universe is on your side, because you will hit shots that you never thought you  could hit.  Your confidence and trust level will begin to soar, and this becomes a lot more fun and it’s why us golfers  come back for more time and time again.

As golf gets more expensive as a hobby or sport that we love to play. The most difficult part of this project is to determine what type, size and strength you need your net to be. There are three types of golf nets or practice cages, stationary, permanent and mobile. For now let’s focus on a stationary net. This can be placed in a yard, shop or garage and would be rather difficult if not impossible to move. The size of the full project is based upon what type of golf shot you will be practicing into it. Some golfers only use a net for their short game, therefore the size is smaller with not too much slack. For full game practice a larger net is required with more slack to allow a catch and release type movement.

This is generally a one day project including the shopping. So if you are determined to have your own golf net or golf cage and want to build it yourself all you need are poles, netting and fittings with something to hold the net in place.

The steps for assembling and making golf nets for the backyard:

1. Acquire netting, preferably made of nylon with seamed edges, grommet holes in the corners and weighting at the bottom to prevent the net from rising on impact.
2. Make use of poles from a used badminton or volleyball set or alternatively pick aluminum poles of 10 feet from the local hardware store
3. Drill holes at the top of the poles at the 3, 6 and 12 o’clock positions. Screw in the eye screws.
4. Use a piece of rope or zip ties may be used for tying the net grommet’s top-most hole to each pole’s inside eye screw.
5. Zip tie the rest of the net to the poles along the seams, leaving enough slack to allow for movement created by the golf ball or wind.To reduce sagging, tighten the net at the top of the poles with zip ties. To make your golf net more portable, add feet to your net to provide proper stabilization. A tight net will cause balls to bounce back. Make sure there is enough slack.
6. Four rope lines each measuring eighteen and twenty feet long should be prepared and a knot tied on each line’s end in each eye screw at the 6 and 12 o’clock positions.
7. The poles should be driven aground with substantial net slack to ensure that the golf ball falls to the ground softly after contact is made.
8. Stake your lines snugly for extra support. Angle the lines at 45 degrees more toward perpendicular to the net in order to avoid reducing slack
9. Remember to always secure your netting to the poles and secure the poles to the ground. Placing the poles in cinder blocks is a great way to do that or in a shallow hole. For a permanent net quick-cret or cement will do the trick.

Bad Weather Take Warning! Remain Safe On The Golf Course By Not Taking Another Golf Swing!

As I watch from my window to the outside world, I’m only dreaming of the warm spring days that won’t becoming to New York for at least another three months. You see we were just hit overnight with 4″ of snow on top of the snow we received from the last snow storm.  Where I live today it’s a balmy 17 degrees outside.  Ouch!

That is why I’m thinking about bad weather conditions in golf. I’m sort of correlating between the two weather conditions of today and what it’s like when you have to play in all kinds of bad weather. Playing in bad weather is a challenge but, when you prepare yourself properly your round of golf doesn’t have to collapse.

All golfers find it difficult to play effectively in inclement weather. Rain, wind and cold will affect your golfing mindset. The way you dress, your golf swing, the flight of the golf ball and the speed and breaks of the greens. No amount of practice or instruction can fully prepare you for bad weather playing.  Being prepared for bad weather will make it bearable for you to play when the weather does turn nasty.

If you expect that your round of golf may encounter rain, then make sure you have extra towels, golf gloves, rain hood for your golf clubs, and rain suit for yourself in your golf bag. Get comfortable with how your rain suit will affect the way you strike your golf ball. Rain suits today are more flexible but, are still restrictive and will change your golf swing.

Another important factor when playing is making sure your hands and the grips on your golf clubs remain dry. You may want to consider buying golf gloves that are now made for extreme weather conditions.  Have a golf umbrella handy at all times to keep the rain off you when you are not taking your golf shot.

One big mistake that most amateurs will make isn’t taking into consideration the distance the golf ball has too travel. The rain will reduce how far your golf shot will carry and the ball won’t roll far either. Depending on how wet the golf course is, you might find that your golf ball most of the time will plug instead of rolling.

Instead of choking down on the golf club with tension in order to have a firm grip from sliding,  try going with at least one more club than normal. When playing from the rough, the wet grass will get between your club face and the ball affecting the way the ball reacts.  Consider your lie when selecting the golf club you’ll use.

The way the golf ball rolls on the greens will definitely change.  The water on the greens will cause your ball to roll slower,  stop quicker and break a lot less than normal.  Be prepared to strike your putts more firmly and plan on a lot less break than normal.

Being properly prepared for bad weather is the key to having a good round of golf.  Be sure to check the forecast before leaving your house.  If lightning is in the forecast,  consider postponing your round.  If lightning moves in while out on the golf course,  get off the course and back to the clubhouse until it by-passes.  Most public and private golf courses have weather monitoring devices and will sound an alarm when the weather dictates.

Golf has always been a passion of mine.  I have spent many years playing the game, and just plain enjoy the time being outside.  However, you are outside and when you see the sky changing take the necessary precautions to stay alert and safe.  If you feel that you can finish the hole then go ahead and do it.  That’s if everyone else in your group agrees.

If not and your at your golf ball in the fairway or rough then mark your golf ball with any object that you can identify later on as being yours.  Put the mark behind the golf ball like you would on the green and leave the ball as it lies.

It reminds me of a high school qualifier I had and in my foursome we were all playing great golf at the time.  We could see the sky turning black and they did blast the air horn from the club house. We decided to ignore the warning and finish out the ninth hole. The winds started howling and the rain instead of coming straight down was pelting us parallel to the ground.  We were soaked and it was one of the most scariest moments of my life.

As we got to our golf balls in the fairway,  the biggest lightening bolt flashed in front of us.  Forget the golf balls we ran into the woods that were off to the side of the fairway. The next thing you could feel was the ground beneath your feet actually shaking with vibrations.  At that precise moment there was such a deafening crack on top of the pine trees that we were under.  A huge branch that would take more than two people to move comes crashing down just missing us by inches.  The branch itself was smoldering from the fire created by the lightening strike.

What seemed to be an eternity,  after about twenty minutes the storm subsided enough for us to go back out from under the trees to finish the hole.  I don’t believe any of us did well on the hole,  because we were still shaking.  At the turn we regained our composure enough to finish the golf qualifier.

There has been many stories about people being struck by lightening.  I personally can’t imagine it,  because there is such a magnitude of power that comes from lightening. My First Rangefinder-- How Far Will Technology Take Us!

With the golden age of caddies long since given way to technology, except for the esteemed private golf clubs. Golfers today have resorted to a wide variety of measures to get yardages, directions and keeping scores.

When playing do you have troubles gauging how far a certain obstacle is, or how far away from the green you need to get to on your next shot?  Are you that type of person with an uncanny ability to estimate how far you need to hit your next shot?

For most people it’s a guessing game but,  it  so much more important when it comes to scoring.  It can make the difference between shooting a great score or being left to frustration and wanting to break every club in your bag.

When I was caddying professionally my job 30+ years ago was to make sure I walked the golf course before my partner even  showed up. Professional caddies would chart a course for their player before every tournament with all of the measurements. You knew the distances of every club your pro swung at.  It was your job to walk the fairways marking down every rock,  sand traps,  trees,  water or any other permanent obstacle that you could gauge from the tees or any other shots from the fairways to the greens.

You mark all of this down in a little black book.  Then everyday early in the morning before each round you graph out each hole’s pin placements.  Measure out by using the old traditional way of one foot in front of the other how far from the front, sides, and back of the greens. You also observe where the pin placement is for that day by writing it all down.

Observing everything, if the green is on a hill, swale or what kind of breaks to the hole when putting. Where is the flat part of the green or safest place to hit the ball to. There was a combination of both guess work and knowing your player’s skill level.

Today, that has all changed with technology. Yardage markers can be defined by sprinkler heads, poles in the fairways, painted numbers on cart paths. Yardage books and laser golf range finders all have become part of the golf landscape and have varying degrees of usage by today’s golfers.

For the high-tech among us, gadgets have been finding their way into more and more golf bags. Compact golf range finders with hand held GPS systems and computer geekery included have found an ever increasing audience. With convenience however, comes cost, and none of these are cheap. The items range in price from $199 to $499.

ONE oF the great pleasures of playing golf in the past 40+ years has been the extraordinary development in technology which makes the game so much easier now than in the early 1980s.  As we enjoy huge titanium drivers, graphite shafts, two-piece balls and soft-faced putters, we wonder how we could ever play with drivers that have heads the size of small boulders and balls which wore a huge smile every time they were hit off center.

Advances aren’t restricted to clubs and balls. When I started playing, club selection was based on the perceived distance of the golf shot. Then it became standard for golf courses to put laser read distance markers on each hole. Technology has started doing that work too and now the R&A and the U.S.G.A.  said, ” they would permit the use of GPS  golf range finders if a club or tournament committee brought in a local rule allowing for its use.”

Not many such local rules have been made in regards to using technology.  For  my club it decided against golf range finders in official club tournaments.  Although they do allow them in regular play and it’s legal, and common in practice rounds.

The biggest problems most golf courses face today is involved in slow play. The endorsement from the P.G.A. made it a big issue of how these gadgets would speed up play. The thinking behind it is that if players have the distance information available instantly, it will speed up club selection, pre-shot routine and actual hitting.

From what I hear, the evidence points out that this not the case. The time a player spends contemplating distances is not regarded as a contributor to the slow pace of play. It’s the decisions on which club to use, plus general preparation for a shot which are the time wasters.

Despite the technology, nothing about golf’s basic premise has changed. It’s great knowing how far away the hole is but, you still have to execute the shot.  MY limited experience using these gadgets are that they can be useful on the golf course.

They quickly provide available and accurate information, so for that reason their usage should be encouraged. When I used it on my home course,  it was really of limited value. I guess that’s because I’ve played there so often, and I know the exact yardages.

Learn To Improve Your Golf Swing In Order To Avoid Injuries!

For many aging golfers when playing golf it can lead to many different injuries, pains and strains.

According to the National Golf Foundation last year in 2008,  over 30,000 injuries occurred that lead to a trip to the emergency room or doctor’s office.

Most problems found were caused by having arthritis to begin with and then overcompensating for the discomfort in their  golf swing that resulted in back pain, knee and hip replacements.

For most golfers they don’t think about injuries. Their focus instead is on having fun and trying to  improve your golf swing and golf scores.

However,  it can take a surprising toll on different parts of your body when your trying to improve your golf swing when it’s out of alignment.

Older golfers especially who aren’t physically active will find their bodies breaking down that can lead to multiple aches and pains as well as injuries.  Golf can be a demanding physical game that requires a lot of  flexibility for twisting and turning.  It will require a lot of bending, gripping and swinging during a round of golf.

Those golfers who are out of shape and not as strong physically as they once were will feel the pressures of physical activity a lot more.  Which places a lot of stress and strain on lower backs, hips, knees, shoulders, neck, hands, wrists and elbows.

You will do a lot of bending and stretching with teeing the golf ball up, repairing divots, marking the ball while on the green, retrieving the ball, picking a club up off the ground and much more, etc.  Also, while walking a nine or 18 hole round of golf over hilly terrain is great exercise, it can take a physical toll on the body.

You can reduce some of the physical stresses that comes with playing golf by improving your golf fitness and by warming up before you play.  Older golfers especially need to take time too stretch their muscles, focusing on their legs, shoulders and back. This all needs to be done before picking up a golf club and start hitting golf balls.

I would then recommend starting out slowly and hit a few golf balls at a time with different golf clubs until you have built up your stamina to start swinging with your driver. Then you cool down by reversing the order of clubs you started with.

Many golfers drink caffeinated or alcoholic beverages before and during play. Their also not aware that their prescription medications, especially some heart medications, interferes with their body’s ability to cool itself off. In which case it increases the risk of heat sickness.

Instead drink plenty of water and sugarless juices, and be prepared to take some sandwiches with you. Sugar will cause a short term spike in energy but, it dosen’t last long enough, and it will actually drain your energy when you need it the most.

Don’t eat junk food like hamburgers or hot dogs at the turn it will also reduce your stamina in later holes. You want the right kind of nutrition that will give you that extra boost of energy when your body needs it the most during your finishing holes. There are many different books and videos on the topic of  “How to improve your fitness.”  Amazon is a great place to look up this information.

There’s also a variety of golfing gadgets and equipment that can help as well. Those who have hand and wrist pain, gripping a golf club can be challenging for golfers who have carpal tunnel syndrome, hand or wrist arthritis, or limited hand strength. You can get larger, softer grips installed on your golf clubs.  It makes the golf clubs easier and more comfortable to hold onto. Your golf shop manager should be able to help you with it.

Winter Is Here, But There is Ways Of Keeping Your Golf Swing Mechanics In Shape!

It’s that time of year in the Northeast part of the country where only the true die hard golfers are still playing. Most golfers have put their golf clubs away and are getting ready to nestle into their warm homes for the winter. Only to dream about what next year’s golfing is going to be like. For many who are retired they are now flocking down into the warm sections of our country, where they are able to keep playing golf.

While a number of players put away the sticks after Thanksgiving, there are still golf courses that remain open year round. Their virtually crying out for your winter golf business.There are golf courses that are frequently free of snow much of the off season. Some of these courses might have temporary greens, and many others allow play on the regular greens and tees.

There is no reason to be blue with cabin fever come January. There is a fraternity of golfers who still get together even with snow on the ground with a stick as a flag stick that allows for the game of golf to continue. Golf can be played despite a layer of crusted snow over much of the area. The ground maybe hard and the golf ball is frozen dead. Which doesn’t allow it to fly very far.  However, you can still use your golf swing mechanics on a very limited basis for just getting a few golf swings in.

There’s just too many ways to spice up the remaining days of Old Man Winter with a bit of Old Man Par for that to happen.  However, you get that phone call from your friends lets go play 18 holes and the next thing you know you can’t wait to get to the golf course.

The first time you play winter golf and your all bundled up. You can’t even move there is no flexibility and the cold winds that are howling blows right through to your bare bones. You shiver and shake from freezing but your out there because you love this game, and quitting is not an option. So you slip on a pair of woolen golf gloves.

Then you’re forced to tee off in front of strangers. Shadowy silhouettes bobble in the windows of the pro shop shelter watching you. You twist yourself like a fool sadly mimicking your golf swing. Timing and Tempo is non-existent. You are a fool or a public clown to be out there in the cold snowy weather.

Unlike playing in warmer weather your out there on your own in a solitary way. The pro shop itself is closed for business and the tee markers are put away in the barn. There are snow piles everywhere and you might lose more than your share of golf balls wherever they land. It’s beyond being quite. Coffee isn’t enough to keep you warm and a flask of brandy might do the trick.

The trees are bare,  and the greens are ringed in winter fungus brown.  Now no one watches you, even the guys your playing with. You tee off into a kind of friendly abyss. You walk quickly, though there’s no one behind you. You are playing winter golf, the most private game of them all.

I’ve never much cared for winter rules. Kick the ball with your foot wedge as you poke it out from under a bush. Drop a new one out of your pocket for all I care, but don’t hide behind some notion of those dopey winter rules. Just keep moving. A key to playing in January and February are the toughest months for golfers. Who wants to risk hitting a long iron thin and leaving his frozen hands feeling like they’ve been massaged with an ice pick?

Your hands are more important then your head in keeping warm. You lose the most heat through your hands. Being ungloved I had hit the point where they seemed like only reminders of hands. Stinging like sharp pine needles with every golf shot you take. That’s how it goes in winter golf.

The golf course is painful and arctic, a grim reminder to the permanence of the dormant golf course laid beneath the tundra landscape. Winter golf wears you out, no matter how many layers you wrap yourself into. “What’s the attraction?”

You play winter golf because the golf fever gets too bad, when you have to get a sense of what you’ve lost in the dark cold months of winter. It had been eight weeks since I’d last played, and I was hungry for it.  When you want even the dimmest sliver of summer.

You put layers of clothing on. You carry the golf bag the way a mountain man carries his hides. Like something purposeful,  very heavy and wet from the outside environment.   You creep up on the familiar spots of summer, and they offer an entirely new challenge. You begin to see the things you’ve wanted to see, the frame of shots that can’t show themselves to you unlike in the summertime. There is something new about the golf course in winter.

So there I am about 150 yards out with the sun creaking through the heavy clouds. I stick my hands inside of my pockets where I have a couple of pocket warmers and walk up to my next shot not thinking about how cold my mind and body is.   Sometimes you can find me out there getting ready to sooth my aches and pains in private.

My ball lies on a thin patch of crusted snow and I have less than 180 yards to the green. The wind starts up again so I take my address to the ball,  focused only on my golf swing mechanics, and draw my club back. I could sense the frost on my face. The grass below looked like wounded and forgotten needles of grass.

Turning through the shot, I could see my frozen hands giving me the dimmest correspondence of contact. I believe the ball rose in a stiff arc. I could not tell you, as I was moving forward out of balance before it landed.  I didn’t listen to my friends shouting encouragement. I was alone with my thoughts, with my golf bag, and the winter season around me.

Another alternative is the sunshine state of Florida and the desert areas out west. There are package deals that includes air fare, hotels, and a number of rounds of golf for a manageable price. I encourage you to pursue the best deals through travel agents and the internet. To find the best deals do your searching on the internet for golf vacations in the designated area you want to travel to. At least this way your in warmer weather and not have to wear warm clothes bundled up.

The Golf Mindset Can Be Frustrating and Rewarding.

Golf is the one of the oldest games in world history still being played today. It’s a game steep in storied traditions and played by the wealthiest to the poorest who can afford to pay for green fees and golf clubs. It was born on the heather-clad, rocky shores of Scotland in the mid 1500′s and the game has evolved through hundreds of years. Queen Mary herself is credited for the birth of the game. She would get so mad and frustrated at English politics that she would go outside on the castle grounds and hit stones with sticks.

Golf clubs were formerly made of hickory wood are now composed of military space-age metals and composites made up of graphite and titanium. Golf balls also evolved from feathers to rubber wound threads surrounding a rubber core are now as advanced as the golf clubs.

Only one thing that hasn’t changed in the hundreds of years since the sport began, and which can momentarily turn grown men and women into frothing, enraged lunatics who have seemingly lost all sense of decorum and reasonable behavior. That is the simple mistake of a golf club failing to connect and striking a small white ball properly. Sending it not on a straight true path but on a wildly curving arc into the woods, or even worse out of bounds. It has turned more than one Dr. Jekyll into a seething Mr. or Mrs. Hyde, hurling golf clubs into the air, breaking them like matchsticks over their knees, bellowing obscenities into the air instead of yelling fore.

Sometimes this game which prides itself on sportsmanship, honor (what other sport requires players to turn themselves in after a rules violation?), and above all else good conduct. It can have the exact opposite effect the angry, outraged, the yin to the sport’s gentle seeming yang. If anyone can describe these fractures of personae, it is the local golf pro. Odds are he or she has seen it all before. They have witnessed the breakdown of a happy go lucky golfer into an enraged, bellowing course malcontent.

The learning part of the game is no fun. The biggest desire of golfers taking golf lessons is consistency. With so much information about the golf swing in print and on TV, the most overlooked area of instruction is the golf mindset of the person taking the golf lessons. They want their problems fixed now not tomorrow.

They are willing to spend thousands of dollars on new golf equipment that can majestically give them that extra distance. Buying new golf balls that can stop instantly on greens and backspin to within a couple of feet from the hole. Taking countless hours of lessons from teaching pros. Some teachers are legit but many shouldn’t be teaching at all. They do more harm than good and makes the golfer even more confused and frustrated.

Instead of looking at the root cause of your problems. The most overlooked areas of golf instructions in regards to cause and effects is the mechanics of your golf swing. In order to improve consistency golfers need to develop the knowledge of their golf swing and what the club head is doing at impact.

Jack Tinsdale has been teaching golf for more than 40 years, and has been licensed as a masters teaching pro in Rochester,NY.  When asked to describe one of his favorite golf stories, he didn’t hesitate.

“This is a great story,” he began, eager to revisit the topic.

“I remember a very prideful man in the Rochester teaching community. He wanted to take up golf with the men’s club, and he wanted to be good.”

“So, he took lesson after lessons, and hit range ball after range balls. I mean, he just pounded ball after ball after ball.  He did improve and his scores did go down. Finally, after about 18 months, he wanted a video diagnosis of his swing. Which we had the tools to do. So we taped him, then sat him down to look at his swing, and he said,  “Are you kidding me?  That’s me?”

“He was like, This is bull. “I thought I looked better than this but I look like  a 30 handicapper.” He was going to quit the club that day and told me he was going to take up fishing. He couldn’t bear the thought that people who saw him play golf with that swing, which was a perfectly OK swing. That’s the thing about golf  the learning period is no fun, and people just get impatient and quit.

You see he was one of my good friends  and I wasn’t going to allow him to quit. He enjoyed being with others in our group and this was an outlet for all of the pressures that he felt teaching during the week. He had a temper and would let you know about it.

My friend who is now deceased was quite the character. Looking back on it now it’s pretty funny. You could say he was like Old Faithful, he would allow the pressures of playing start to build up with every mistake he made until there she blows with every curse word and throwing clubs imaginable. It got to the point where he’d warn us. He’d say, “here we go, it’s time to throw a club.”You could see it coming. First, he’d start by banging his club on the ground. He’d do that a few times until that wasn’t enough  and then he’d just throw it. Then it’d be out of his system for a while and he’d be fine.

I’ve seen the same emotions and behaviors with the golf professionals I have caddied for. I have seen it with doctors, lawyers and business men. I have seen it with everyday folks who would never act this way at home. People who are well rounded in life,   meticulous and perfect at what they do in the real world.  They come out to play and want to be automatically perfect and shoot par are the same ones who fail miserably at this game. They can’t be this bad and it drives them insane. I mean completely wacko!

Golf is like a fine art. It’s like a dance that you need to have rhythm and tempo. You need the proper golf mindset of being patient and allow for the fact that most of your hits are going to be misshots. That the percentages of hitting perfect shots is 1 in 10, maybe 2 or 3 in 10.

Get it out of your head that you need to remain focused and precise or you’ll pay the price.  It doesn’t help that golfers in your group are whispering while your teeing off about negative things like don’t miss it or look out for out of bounds.

Psychological warfare was invented, I believe to torment your fellow golfers. These same golfers get out there after spending hours on the driving range and putting green, and they just flat out hit  terrible shots.  Man are they angry. It becomes a game to see who can blow up first. You could be a real nice guy, really mild mannered but, that’s golf. It’s a game you play but you can never beat it, and that drives the same golfers crazy.

They figure they’ve put in the time, that this kind of thing shouldn’t happen to them. Then they go out take five perfect practice swings, then dump it right into the creek.  But you know what?  That’s golf!  It’s not real life!

A golf mindset is critical, not only improving one’s self confidence in your ability to play the game but, how your going to react when you start playing poorly and the golf strokes start adding up. How are you going to feel when you lose out to another player’s bet or you have to buy the first round of drinks?

My friend Andrew Scott, a regular golfer like you and me had exactly the same problem and got even more frustrated after every round of golf. It seemed to him that he was suppose to practice a certain way on the driving range. But when he went  out on the golf course his struggles became even worse. He started hitting with the wildest slices into water hazards, sand traps and out of bounds.

His power was null and void because he kept hitting the ground first before the ball.  Most times topping and never getting the ball airborne. He had no control especially around the greens. He shanked a lot of pitches and chip shots. His self confidence was lacking because he missed a lot of short putts. There were rounds where he had over 40 putts.  All caused by anxiety, fears  and self doubts. At times you could say he was yipping which should only happen when you get older in life not when your younger.

Everything worked well on the driving range  hitting the balls long and straight. However, back on the golf course his golf swing suddenly fell apart after a few holes.  His scores did not drop at all!

I’m not going to write about golf equipment or tips or anything else for that matter that can help you improve your golf swing.  I would like to talk about something that is really thrilling to me to be witness of.  Have you ever taken part in a 300 game in bowling or hit the perfect golf shot resulting in a hole in one?  If you have I would love to hear your story.  Please describe your experience in the comment box below.  For that matter any unusual kind of shot that has had a profound impact on your memory bank.

For me I have seen all kinds of hole in ones in my life.  I’ve personally have 4 hole in ones.  I still remember my second hole in one. It was on a 220yard sixth hole par 3.  I used my 3 wood.  It happened back in 1991 when the public course I still play on today had no fairway watering system in place.  In the middle of summer it gets rock hard and of course you get a lot of roll on your ball.

Back  then I was known in the golf club as “King of the low ball.” I always hit every one of my golf clubs on a low trajectory to get that extra roll. That is why today I still struggle in hitting the high trajectory, because now they have the watering system in place. If someone was standing in front of me back then, I probably would cut that person in half at the waist. My ball would never go any higher.

So, I teed off and I remember they were working on fixing the ground. There was probably a 4 ft dirt mound in the area of the woman’s tee box.  My ball barely missed the top of the dirt mound went out about 120 yards and ran like a scared jack rabbit for the last 100 yards. It disappeared as soon as it ran up onto the green. You see this hole is very flat with no trouble around it. At the time I was playing with an orange color golf ball, during this time period Jerry Pate made it very fashionable to play with different color golf balls. There was no one around the green waving us up and the peripheral vision didn’t allow us to see over the green.

As my foursome walked up to the green they allowed me to go first to see if it was in the hole.  Sure enough the orange golf ball was in the bottom of the cup. What a feeling of euphoria! It was my first hole in one with the golf club. Yeah, it cost me the rest of the day about $ 100 in drinks. That is cheap compared to some other hole in ones.

Tradition states if you get a hole in one, then you must pay for all drinks at the 19′th hole. In Japan, they even have hole in one insurance in case of such events.  However, on this day we took it out to another bar where I would meet for the very first time a very special person in my life.  He died this past winter of emphysema.

They say getting a hole in one is harder to get than bowling a 300 game.  I don’t know? What is your feelings in regards to this? I believe in golf just like bowling there is a lot of luck involved.  However, it does take some skills to hit the ball in the direction you want it to go and what club to use to reach that certain distance.

Whatever way your golf ball gets there it doesn’t matter one iota! It’s the end result of watching that tiny golf ball disappearing into the hole. Many people will never experience it themselves like my father who has been playing as long as I have. You may have been there watching a live golfing event or among friends but it never gets old nothing less.

Golf Range Finders Can Make Golf, So Much More Ejoyable!

When playing do you have troubles gauging how far a certain obstacle is, or how far away from the green you need to get to on your next shot?  Are you that type of person with an uncanny ability to estimate how far you need to hit your next shot?  For most people it’s a guessing game but,  it  so much important when it comes to scoring.  It can make a difference between shooting a great score or being left to frustration and wanting to break every club in your bag.

When I was caddying professionally my job 30 years ago was to make sure I walked the golf course before my partner even  showed up.  You knew the distances of every club your pro swung at.  It was your job to walk the fairways marking down every rock,  sand traps,  trees,  water or any other permanent obstacle that you could gauge from the tees or any other shots from the fairways to the greens.

You mark all of this down in a little black book.  Then everyday early in the morning before each round you graph out each hole’s pin placements.  Measure out by using the old traditional way of one foot in front of the other how far from the front, sides, and back of the greens. You also observe where the pin placement is, by writing down if it’s on a hill, swale or what kind of breaks to the hole when putting. Where is the flat part of the green or safest place to hit the ball to.

There was a combination of both guess work and knowing your player’s skill level.  It can make all the difference in where he finishes in the tournament and how much money he earns.  Which has a direct bearing on how much money you make, since most of the time you earned by commissions only.

Today it’s much easier as most of the grunt work can be done using the latest technology.  There are many GPS golf range finders on the market today.  Depending on the manufacturer each one works a little bit different. The one I like and you can download any golf course both in the United States and Globally and be able to store this information on any hard drive is Garmin‘s.
