Women Golfers Are Very Good In Following Golf Etiquette On The Golf Course!

Most experienced golfers can handle playing with someone who is just learning to play.  Who has lower than average skills provided the new golfer possess adequate golf course etiquette and plays at a reasonable pace.  Bad etiquette, however, is virtually guaranteed to prevent a future invitation to be part of the same group.  Here are a few basic rules of golf course etiquette that will be useful for anyone just starting out and a good reminder for the more experienced golfers.

Even before going to the golf course, there are a few things you need to  do:

Try  going to a driving range before playing a round. Unless you are incredibly athletic and can pick up a golf club and start hitting 200 yard drives, you might want to go to a driving range to practice your golf swing mechanics.  Take along a friend who knows how to golf,  and can show you the basics of the stance, grip and swing.  Review each golf club and know your own yardages for each club.

• Arrive before your scheduled tee time. You can’t expect to show up 3 minutes before you tee off!  Get yourself prepared by taking your golf bag out of the car and loaded onto the golf cart if your riding.  Otherwise put your golf bag onto a pull cart, and put your golf shoes on.  Pay for your golf round at the pro shop. Start warming up doing exercises and stretches, etc.  If they have a driving range, hit a few golf balls, then finish with some chipping and putting.  Be ready when they call your name, and make certain you get to the first tee on time. Golf courses are businesses and most of them are busy. Tee times are often scheduled at 7 minute intervals so it is imperative that you arrive with plenty of time to spare. (think 30 minutes or so ahead of allotted time.)  The last thing you want is your golf swing to be out of sync with your timing, due to rushing in order to make your tee time. You’ll be fighting with yourself the rest of the day in trying to make up for being late.

• Bag Drop. Golf courses usually have an area where you can get your bag out of your car and set it down before parking.  Fancy courses will even have an attendant who will get your bag out and bring it to a cart for you.  Be prepared to tip this individual as you would a skycap.  These attendants may also retrieve your bag at the end of your round and clean your clubs.  Again, be prepared with a tip.

During the Golf Round.

There are several courtesy items that need to be remembered while playing on the golf course.  In order to respect the course itself and the players with whom you are playing with.  Respecting the golf course boils down to damage control,  and allowing those behind your group to play the same course under the best possible conditions.  Several points to remember:

• Keep the golf carts on the path near all tees and greens and on all par 3 holes for its entire length.
• Follow any special cart rules for the day such as 90 degree or cart path only if the course is very damp.
• Replace divots in the fairway (or fill with sand mixture if provided) and on all the tee boxes.  Also fix your ball marks on the green.
• Never drive a cart in long grass, bunkers, or hazards.
• Never drive up close to the green. That includes aprons and the green itself.
• Throwing clubs could damage the course, or injuries to others. (Not to mention make you look like a jerk).
• Never in frustration, swing the golf club or putter at others. (That includes hitting the golf ball.)

You should also show a deep respect for the other players in your group by adhering to the following:

• Do not make noise or move when another player is taking his/her golf shot.
• Do not stand in the line of sight or the peripheral vision of another player while taking their golf shot.  (Also be cognizant of your shadow so that it is not in the line of the golf shot.)
• Do not walk between the ball of another player and the hole when on the green.  (In other words, do not walk in someone’s  line or path when on the putting green.)
• Do not hit your golf ball while another is taking their turn. (Unless everyone in the group agrees to Ready golf.)
• The player farthest from the hole is the one who takes their turn first.
• The player with the lowest score on the previous hole has the honor of teeing off first on the next hole unless everyone in the group has agreed to play ready golf.  Meaning who ever is ready to hit, as long as no one else is hitting.

These are just a few of the basic rules of etiquette that should get you through the game.  At the end of the golf round, be sure to shake everyone’s hand and thank them for playing.  Golf is a gentleman’s game it’s meant to be  fun. You can compete against yourself  and the golf course while enjoying the company of others.

Jim Furyk Wins The Heritage After A Tough Golf Ruling!

As a young pro on the P.G.A. tour, and with his chance to win the first golf tournament of his career. The hangman’s noose finally caught up with him. With the Heritage on the line with a first hole playoff against Jim Furyk, he makes a small mistake that will cost him his dream of winning. Golf is a gentleman’s game unlike any other sporting event. It’s based solely upon honor and integrity.  Brian Davis was faced with a conscionable decision he had to make, if you don’t say anything you might just get away with it.  How would you act? Would you own up to your mistake, or would you keep quiet and hope for the best?

Being a young player Brian Davis isn’t the best known name in golf today.  However, after Sunday he should move up the list a few notches.  What happened was his approach shot bounces off the fist playoff green and nestled in among some weeds. Watching television you could see the gunk he was trying to hit out of.  He tried to punch the ball up onto the green, but his golf club grazed a stray weed on his back swing.

Loose Impediment Rule 18-2a. When a player’s golf ball is in play and it moves when addressing the ball, or causes it to move an immediate one stroke infraction occurs. If the golf ball moves it must be replaced back to original position. If movement occurs after the player begins his stroke, or the backward movement of the golf club and touches any part of a hazard the stroke shall be deemed  occurred.  Another penalty stroke must be assessed.

Being that this is such an ethical game and is based upon honor, integrity and tradition. Brian Davis did more for this game of golf by calling the violation on himself. It will pay him back in an abundant way. Even though the difference between 1′st and 2′nd place is a loss of $400,000.  He’s a good player with a lot of respect by his peers now.

This reminds me of the 1984 Senior’s Championship at Oak Hill C.C.  One of the greatest golfer’s in our lifetime did a similar mistake during the third round of the tournament.  Arnold Palmer was putting for a 2 inch par on a par 3, and called a stroke on himself. I wasn’t near the green, but I could hear a terrible groan from the gallery. I asked someone who was watching what happened?  They said, “they couldn’t see him move the putter much less make a stroke.”  Even the television cameras couldn’t pick it up, not unlike Davis where you could see the golf club moving the impediment on his back swing. Arnie would go on and lose the championship by one stroke to Miller Barber.

There has been other incidents such as J.P. Hayes disqualifying himself for playing the wrong golf ball during qualifying school. Craig Stadler committing a penalty by putting a towel down on the ground under a pine tree and kneeling down on it.  Which violates under improved lies rule.  Adam Van Houten, who cost his team an Ohio state title when he admitted signing an incorrect scorecard. A similar situation occurred to a good friend of mine, who was caddying and keeping score for a top amateur in the Rochester area. This tournament is the biggest event of the year, with an automatic exemption into the N.Y.S. Amateur’s. That proved to be a costly mistake that he never got over, because he knew the golf rules.

Do you believe that the general public, regardless if their watching from the gallery or viewing it on television, that they have the rights to call the P.G.A. and point out any infractions that could have incurred? For starters, Davis shot was on television, and while he could have “not noticed” the movement. The TV cameras still did, and someone might have called him on it later on. Do you believe technology should be the determining factor when making a ruling? Should golf be judged like you have with other sports in using instant replay?

As soon as the replays confirmed the violation, Davis conceded the victory to Furyk, who was somewhat stunned. Make no mistake, Jim Furyk was grateful for the overall win.  Davis said, “I thought I saw movement out of the corner of my eye, and I thought we’d check it on TV.” Indeed there was movement.  Immediately after the shot, Davis called over a golf rules official, who conferred with television replays and confirmed the movement.  It was only visible on slow-motion. Unbelievable. “To have the tournament come down that way is definitely not the way I wanted to win,” Furyk said.  “It’s obviously a tough loss for him and I respect and admire what he did.” The key to great sportsmanship was that Davis gave away a chance at winning his first ever P.G.A. Tour event.  He  knew that in golf,  honesty is more important than victory.  It’s a tough lesson to learn,  but here’s hoping he gets his  accolades.

L.P.G.A. Championships @ Locust Hill C.C. June 24-27.

As of June 24-27- Rochester NY, will be center stage in yet another major championship. This time it will be the Ladies turn as they get their opportunity to host the L.P.G.A. Championships.  For over 33 years, Locust Hill C.C. has been host to the L.P.G.A. on the regular tour. Wegmans Super Markets, has been the sponsor of one the most popular tournaments on the ladies tour.

In the past Rosie Jones, two-time champion of this golf tournament was quoted last year as saying, ” Without a doubt,  the Rochester event is a major tournament without being part of the four major golf tournaments every year.” The fans of Rochester NY  are the most knowledgeable about golf, and the players and sponsors do want to make this their shining jewel on the tour.

In 1973,  United States Women’s Open was held at the  Country Club of Rochester, it would be the last major tournament for the ladies here in this city.  I was 17, and this is where I got my chance to caddy for the first time on the national stage.  The summer before this I was caddying locally at the prestigious Oak Hill C.C.. Home of the 1995 Ryder Cup, 1956-1968-1989 United States Men’s Open, 1984 U.S. Seniors Open, 1980,2003 P.G.A. Championships and 1949, 1998 U.S. Amateur.

One of my highlights after walking the golf course and marking yardages down for my amateur player, who was then the Pennsylvania champion.  As I was walking up to the caddy shack, two men were walking towards me chatting away.  One man was Jim McKay and the other was my idol Byron Nelson. I remember vividly Jim McKay could care less who I was, but  Mr.Nelson stopped and shook my hand.  He wanted to know everything! Who I was caddying for and do I play golf?  He actually gave me pointers on certain holes that I should pass onto my player. It was a thrill of a lifetime to meet him.

Since 1977, the purse then was $75,000, this year they will be playing for $2.25 million dollars. Besides the money, they also will be competing for one of the most coveted trophies.  For many of the players, Rochester is considered home, and they talk about it as if it was part of their family. They talk about the brand, and about the Wegman family. The community support and large following is the reason why it has become a premier event.  This was the vision of Robert Wegman (owner),  who died in 2006. That Rochester NY, would be home to a major golf tournament. This is a win-win-win  situation for  the fans, Rochester business community and L.P.G.A.

The L.P.G.A. has been struggling with revenue in the past year, because of the economic uncertainties.  Causing several corporate sponsors to decline renewal of their contracts with the L.P.G.A.  McDonald’s  and Corning both folded their tournaments after a long relationship. This left a gap for Rochester to take over for McDonald’s.  However, with fewer golf tournaments there is less prize money, and a later start than usual for the first golf tournament of the year. The new golf season starts with the Kraft Nabisco Championship on April 1-4.

Regardless of what happens down the road for the L.P.G.A.  At least for now Rochester NY, must be considered a major league player as it steps onto the biggest stage, and no one is disappointed by that.  Rochester and Wegmans will share the spotlight to this prestigious event with enthusiasm from the fans, sponsors, media and networks. This is truly an awesome and glorious moment for my beloved  city.

Women Golfers Follows The Rules And Etiquette Better Then Most Men!

Golf Etiquette, equipment  and rules make up most of the recent questions received from women golfers. Here are some of your queries and answers.

Q: Should a woman golfer putt with her glove on or off?

A: You can putt wearing a glove; you can putt without one. It’s up to you. Just remember to be quick and decisive in making the transition. Remove it before you get to the green. Put it back on before you get to the tee.

Q: Where can I get golf balls with the pink ribbon breast cancer awareness symbol?

Q: If a player hits her ball into a lateral water hazard and decides to take relief, does she drop a ball inside or outside the hazard?

A: If a player’s ball rests in a lateral water hazard, she has, under penalty of one stroke, four options. All four options (see Rule 26-1) require the player to drop a ball outside the hazard.

Q: I recently played on a windy day. Just as I was about to putt on a particular green, my ball was blown away about an inch from me. I had not started the back swing and I had not touched the ball in any way. Was I supposed to take a penalty?

A: Yes. Rule 18b of the “Rules of Golf” says that if a player’s ball moves after she has addressed it (other than as a result of a stroke), the player shall be deemed to have moved the ball and shall incur a penalty stroke. The player shall replace the ball unless the movement of the ball occurs after she has begun her swing and she does not discontinue her swing.

Q: I recently won a golf club as a prize in a local tournament but my friends tell me it is a “knock-off” club. What is this?

A: A “knock-off” club is an inexpensive, often poorly made version of a well-known, highly regarded golf club. These clubs have become especially prevalent in the 1990s with the development of distinctive designs for clubs. The authorities are starting to crack down on imported knock-offs. For example, U.S. Customs recently ruled that the Tommy Mann Bumber is a counterfeit of  Taylor Burner Bubble. This ruling enables agents to seize these clubs at U.S. ports of entry and distribution and retail outlets.

Golf Etiquette is a principle that needs to be learned from right in the beginning of learning the game along with how to use the correct golf swing mechanics.

Etiquette is social mannerisms that needs to be taught in order to make everyone else that’s playing with you that much more enjoyable to be with on the golf course.

With the evolution of the game and more average golfers watching golf on television. The popularity of the game has exploded and now everyone feels like that they can play the game just like the tournament professionals.

That’s why knowing the local and U.S.G.A. rules are so important when it comes to fair play. Becoming a role model that abides by the rules, having social etiquette, all leads to outstanding gamesmanship play.

On any given weekend, with the game’s popularity at an all-time high, there are more people than ever playing golf. Cheers regularly sprout up after making putts and long drives,and it happens everywhere from private clubs to public golf courses.

The number one gripe by most golfers is slow play. Whatever it takes. Whether it’s picking up the golf ball or throwing it up to the edge of the green, always maintain a ready to play position on the golf course well ahead of the group behind you.  The problems most golf course marshals will tell you is that when it comes to recreational golfers they tend to spend way too much time on inferior play or lost golf balls.

No one ever mastered the game in a day, and even a $4 Titleist Pro V1x isn’t worth ruining the round for the groups behind you.  Most golf etiquette is based upon common sense, and the knowledge of your own golf swing mechanics. Don’t touch your golf ball and play from where it lies unless otherwise stated in agreement by everyone else playing with you. Don’t fake sneezing or refrain from talking when someone in your group is going through their golf swing. Repairing ball marks on the green and divots in the fairway makes the golf course play better for everyone. Personal space is also crucial. Stand out of the lines of sight in all playing situations. Don’t crowd.

Above all else be fair to yourself and everyone else by counting all of your strokes and marking down the correct score on the scorecard.  When you hit the ball out of bounds admit to it, and play your next shot according to the rules of the game. Even if it means walking back to the tee box to rehit with a stroke penalty.

When your on the green don’t trample another player’s putting line. Be aware of shadows over people’s lines and over the cup. As petty as this may sound don’t pull your golf ball after making a putt with your putter.  A dented cup made by your putter or another golf ball left in the hole can actually propel another golf ball out. Stranger things have happened.

The general consensus is that most rules are broken, not out of spite, but out of ignorance. A beginner grounding a club in a sand trap (stroke penalty) is usually not trying to gain a competitive advantage. If that same beginner putts out of turn (closer to the hole) it’s normally not intentional, either.  Good Etiquette is all about common sense but, what about gamesmanship? Pushing proper etiquette to the limits?

Golf psychology was meant as a form of torture for golfers no matter what your skill level your at. You get players that will try to get into your head. They’ll say little things that try to get you going.  Subtleties do  become obvious and can lead to anger, fights, obscene language, and walking off the golf course leaving your group behind you. I hate it when your teeing off and someone starts walking before you even hit the ball. I would catch the person out of the corner of my eye.

I remember in a High School match my good friend that I played golf with on a regular basis did this to me. He would do this for three or four holes.  I warned him that I had no idea or control when I hit the golf ball where it was going. I asked him was, ” I holding him up?”

I’ve always hit a low trajectory shot. I still do today. I have no idea how to hit a high trajectory, my golf swing mechanics is based upon memory of how to hit a low trajectory. The problem is if someone is standing in front of me, and I hit my missile shot the golf ball can do great damage to the body. I believe I could cut you in half. I’ve tried it on the yellow pages book and the golf ball did cut a hole right through it.

Anyways were on a par 5 and my friend hits a great second shot. We believe he made it onto the green, and he goes running to the bend in the fairway on top of the hill to look.  Not realizing other golfers in our group are also hitting. Now it’s my turn and I ask him to get behind a tree to the side of the fairway. He ignores me so I hit my 3 wood and it’s a blazing rocket about waist length off the fairway, and you guessed it? It hits him squarely in the rib cage and he goes down like a deer being shot.

I thought I had killed him. He wasn’t moving and we had to get a rescue crew to the scene. That night I visited him in the hospital it turns out he was lucky.  The golf ball broke two of his ribs and bruised his lung. It could of been a lot worse. That was 36 years ago and I bet you he still has the golf ball dimples where it him to show for it.

Some groups think they’re the only ones in the whole world. You can now frequently hear more often  hoots and hollers. I’m noticing that a little bit more, and on a golf course like mine that has close fairways and greens, it can become a distraction.  The bottom line with playing golf it’s as close to reflecting real life. Treat others with respect and your surroundings as you would have them treat you, and if you have a question, ask for it.

What do I do when my  own playing partner calls me on a golf ruling?

My name is Ken and  I have a ruling problem that I would like clarified. I was involved in a  best ball golf tournament and I hit a wicked slice off the tee on a hole that has out of bounds stakes down the right hand side of the fairway. In the out of bounds area were a number of trees. My shot sliced itself out and it appeared from the tee that it definitely was OB.  So, I hit a provisional ball and then went to look for the original ball under the 5 minutes time limit for looking.

We found my original golf ball and to my surprise it was still in bounds.  My moron playing partner calls me out with his own interpretations of the golf rule.  He tells me that I must play the provisional ball because obviously the ball must have hit a tree that was ob and bounced back in bounds.  I went along with him in order to keep peace.

Who was correct?   Does anyone reading this know the answer to my dilemma?   Leave your comments below?

According to Rule 27-2, section C. Your playing partner was totally wrong. You could have done two things to have protected yourself from further rulings. You could have played both your original ball and the provisional ball, then finished the hole out with both.  Before signing your golf card sought out the ruling from the club professional or a  member on the rules committee. The other thing you could have done was find out the ruling in your U.S.G.A. rules book you should be carrying with you in your golf bag at all times.

The golf rules states:  When the original ball is neither lost or out of bounds. The player shall abandon the provisional ball and continue playing with the original ball. If the player fails to do so, any further strokes played with the provisional ball shall constitute playing the wrong golf ball and the provisions of rule 15 shall apply. (Two strokes penalty for every shot you hit with the wrong ball in stroke play or lost of hole in match play.)

I had a similar experience as you. With me it cost me the club championship at my golf course that I play on. I was at the 18′th hole a 225 yard par 3.  I was leading by one shot and needed par. Trees to the left and a roadway to the right out of bounds. In front of the green to the right was a culvert that allowed the creek to run through it . I hit a 3 wood and it had a banana flight to it.  It ended up in the culvert.  It was at the end of summer so there was very little water in it but a lot of green cabbage. You had to hit an explosion shot out of there.  I was able to hit a sand wedge out of there because I was only 30 yards away from the green.

Since I was playing in the last group there was a lot of spectators around the green mostly my fellow golfers that I play with in the club. They were all yelling at me that I must hit the ball where it lays. In normal conditions I agree. However, the culvert according to local or club rules stated, it’s pick, clean and place. NO CLOSER TO THE HOLE.

I didn’t do this because I forgot the golf rules myself.  So I listened to my friends and hit the sand wedge the ball ended up sailing over the spectators heads behind the green.  Now I had a steep downhill chip with the green slanting away from me.  Of course I over chipped ending up with a 30 ft putt for a tie.  From there I ended up two putting and lost the club championship by one stroke.

I was so furious,  went and sought out the club pro for his interpretation. Bottom line I should have finished the hole out playing with two balls. The original and provisional, and then found out the correct ruling. It was a hard lesson to learn, but  I never forgot about it.  To this day the one who was doing the most yelling was  me,  and I’m the one who lost, because I didn’t know the golf rules .

U.S.G.A. Is The Governing Body In The United States For Golf Rules And How To Conduct Oneself On The Golf Course!

With this being my first written post I would like to tell you a little story about myself.

I started playing with my father in 1968.  There was a golf course owned by my father’s family in Northern New York along Lake Champlain.  I would spend all summer playing for close to nothing at all.

In 1973,  at the age of 17,  I had the opportunity to caddy in the W omen’s  United States Open for an amateur by the name of Janice Palmer.  I loved it and started caddying every year,  not only locally  but  when the L.P.G.A. came to Rochester, New York every year.

A good friend of mine would allow me to tag  along with him to the country club during the summer months where I was able to meet  many good  golfers my own age in the junior ranks. There was one kid who had 3 brothers who I was able to play a great deal with,  his  name is Jeff  Sluman,  who is now on the senior tour.

In the summer of 1974  there was a girl living across the street  from me who was engaged to a pro golfer by the name of Terry Diehl.  I was fortunate to caddy for him that summer in  a few tournaments where I got to meet  some  PGA players.

I would go on to  junior college and enjoyed playing collegiate golf.   My roommate during these tournament events has a brother on the senior tour now,  his name is Wayne Levi.   Playing on this level would help me establish the belief in myself that I was capable of playing good golf.  My handicap was never better than a 6 handicap,  but it never took away my passion to compete in tournaments or in regular Nassau games at my local golf club.

That’s my story, now let’s talk about Golf Etiquette!

Unlike many sports,  golf is for the most part played without the supervision of a referee,  umpire or  coach.

The game relies on the individual golfers to show consideration for other players and to abide by the rules.  New golfers are often in need of advice about  behavior and practices to follow on the golf course so that play can proceed  safely and without delay.

In order to enjoy this game like I have  for  the past 40 years everyone needs to pay closer attention not only to  improve your golf swing mechanics,  but also to the rules of the game including proper golf etiquette.  In future blog posts,  I’m  going to talk about all aspects of the game from rules and etiquette to faster play on the golf course.

I’m going to be conducting interviews with local club head professionals as well as some professionals you will recognize on both the regular and senior tours.   They will share their insights into the proper golf equipment and how to improve your golf swing mechanics.

Golf skills come in many different levels.  From the beginner just learning,  to intermediate level players who compete with their friends,  and join their local clubs,  private or public for competition. Learning or knowing the rules of fair play is essential to the principals of proper etiquette on the golf course,  so that everyone benefits in having a good time.   Some rules are very antiquated and shouldn’t even be applied to today’s standards, and some rules are very controversial.  Like the time Craig Stadler had to take a stroke penalty for improving his lie by having a towel under his knees as he attempted to make a shot  from under the pine tree.

Golf etiquette is  all about mannerisms and being polite to another person who may not even be in your group.  It’s knowing when to be quiet and when you can talk.  It’s never riding on a golf cart ahead of someone else trying to hit.  Knowing when it’s your turn to hit, and stop walking when you should have stopped in the first place.  It’s about obeying the 90 degree rule when on a golf cart during bad weather.  It’s aligning your tee behind the golf tee not in front of the tee box.  Counting and giving your correct score not cutting strokes off because you might lose the match or tourney.

It means not repeatedly hitting into the group ahead of you.  I personally will give you two warnings.  The third time I will aim for your head and hit the ball back to you.  Nor is it  getting so mad and frustrated that you throw clubs and break them.  Also taking a swing at the golf ball because you just missed a putt and just missing hurting someone. I’ve actually got into a fistfight over that one. Have you experienced anything like this as well on the golf course? Rule of the day from  the USGA

Q:  A player hits his tee shot into heavy rough approximately 150 yards from the teeing ground and since his ball may be lost outside a water hazard he plays a provisional ball.  After searching briefly for his original ball he goes forward to play his provisional ball which is in a bush approximately 200 yards from the teeing ground.  He deems his provisional ball unplayable and drops it within two club-lengths of where it lay under Rule 28c. Before playing the provisional ball, the player’s original ball is found by a spectator within five minutes of the player having begun to search for it. What is the ruling? 7-2b/6.5 Player shall deem the Provisional Ball Unplayable and Drops Ball;  Original Ball Then Found.

A:   The original ball remained the ball in play since it was found within five minutes after search for it had begun and the player had not played a stroke with the provisional ball (see Rule 27-2b).  The fact that the player lifted and dropped the provisional ball under Rule 28c is irrelevant.
