Be Prepared! Change Your Golf Swing Mechanics In Order To Combat The Cold!
September 28, 2010 by Parshooters
With October fast approaching at the end of this week,we are now heading into cooler air, and away from the summertime heat. You need to become more prepared for the inclement weather conditions ahead. Cold air is much heavier, therefore it creates more resistance to the flight of the golf ball. Colder, heavier winds and rains naturally will encourage golfers to swing harder, which will create more mishit errors. The first thing to go in your golf swing mechanics is your timing, as you try to speed up or overswing in order to compensate for the lack of distance. The second thing that disappears is your feelings in your hands, especially around the greens. That’s why you have more blading or thin shots.
I’m personally not a good cold air golfer, nor do I like playing in the bone chilling rain. I know a few golfers who can play in these awful weather conditions, and most of the time they do quite well in winning the club’s pot money for the day. Tom Watson loved playing in adverse conditions. He knew that half the field was virtually eliminated before they even started playing. It’s no fun being wet and trying to beat the dreaded cold. It’s psychological warfare, and if your a good mudder it’s to your advantage. Most golfers don’t want to be there, and more likely their going to be rattled by the adverse conditions.
Being cold it will automatically cause you to be swinging out of position through impact. A very common error is that the right shoulder is way too high through the hitting area. This action allows your right side to dominate at the most inappropriate time. This will force the club head to approach the golf ball into a steep undesirable angle. This result in golf is known as coming over the top.
In order to combat the negative weather conditions, you need to adjust your attitude and golfing mindset. You must be willing to change your approach to your golf swing mechanics, by producing a lower trajectory to the flight of the golf ball. This would be known as the knock down or punch shot. Your golf swing mechanics is the same as outlined from my last post. (That’s is how to hit it low.)
Don’t beat yourself up for playing miserable golf. You need to be more realistic and understanding that the golf ball isn’t going to go as far or spin as much in the cold. You also have to be prepared for the fact that you can’t go out there with the same strategy as you would on a normal day. Be prepared for a tough day and stay mentally tough.
Be prepared and watch the weather forecast the night before playing, and then check it again the next morning for an update before leaving for the golf course. The weather report will inform you of all the conditions you can expect for that particular day. You’ll need to know how to dress, and if you need any extra golf equipment like jackets, warmer hats, mittens, rain suit, umbrella and extra towels. Don’t be caught lacking for essentials out on the golf course. The worst feeling in the world is your extremely cold, shivering and shaking to the very core of your bones, and you still have a lot of golfing left.
The following golf tips can make your golfing round more comfortable and enjoyable by using some common sense:
- Outerwear is critical. (Today you have micro fiber windbreakers and rain suits. They keep the wind and rain out and warmth in. Their light weight, and allow for free swinging.)
- Protect your head, feet and hands at all times. (This is the single most important tip for cold weather golfing!)
- Your hands are your only link to the golf club. (If your hands are frozen, you will lose all of your feelings, especially around the greens.)
- Get yourself a nice pair of mittens and/or some hand warmers for your pockets. (Keep your hands warm. Your hands will feel like steel pliers.)
- Cover your head and ears. (Up to 50% of your body heat is lost through your head. Cover your head and ears with a woolen hat or ear warmers.)
- Dress in layers. (Instead, wear a turtle neck or insulating layer, thermal underwear, warm socks, followed by a long sleeve shirt and thin sweater or wind shell. This layered approach will keep you warm and still allow you to make a full golf swing.)
- Don’t wear a ski parka or heavy jacket while playing. (Your golf swing will turn into a slap shot with no rotational movement of the body.)
- Keep your golf balls warm. (Taking care of your golf equipment and yourself is essential.) Cold golf balls don’t fly as far. (They feel heavy like rocks, slow off the club face and will not travel in distance.)
- Play a softer shell golf ball. (Some balls are softer and in cold weather you’ll want a golf ball that is easier to compress.) Use more golf club. (Golf balls don’t travel in the cold. You might have to use two to four more clubs to make up the distance.)
- Hit it solid. (There is nothing worst when you hit a stinger into your hands, because of mishitting the golf shot a few grooves too low. Ouch!)
- Play the bump and run for best results. (Channel your inner Scotsman and play the ground game.)
- When it’s bitter cold outside. (The ground will be concrete. So use it to your advantage. Forget the flop shot in the cold, as the ball won’t spin.)
- Don’t stop drinking fluids. (Don’t drink too much coffee. Your body still needs nutrients and hydration even when it’s cold. Don’t forget to take a few sips of the sports drink to stay properly hydrated.)
- Relish the challenge. (Check the ego at the pro shop. Take solace in the fact that most everyone out there with you is miserable! At the very least, it will make you feel better.)
As we get into mid to late fall, there is no region in the United States that has more scenic gorgeous colors in full bloom than right here in the Northeast. Leaves become majestic in color with their golden reds and yellows. The land is alive with all different variation of colors. This to me is the best time of year to be playing golf, because you know the bad weather is coming, but your still playing in mid 70′s weather in shorts. For those who still are still playing, enjoy the weather now, because the seasons are a changing with blowing in the wind.
