Does Learning Through Yoga Mindsets Will Lead To An Improved Golf Swing Mechanics Overall?

For the serious golfer the game is a dedication to improving one’s golf skills and mindset. It’s an opportunity to get away for some 4+ hours from the daily grind and stress of everyday living. Most of the time this isn’t done and instead we bring our anger, frustrations and temperament with us out on to the golf course. Instead what you observe most of the time is frustrated golfers heaving golf clubs, making vehement self-incriminatory remarks, swearing, and throwing temper tantrums that would rival those of a 2-year-old.
Focus is the last word you would use when observing images of the frustrated golfer. Golfers who don’t learn to appreciate the mental aspect of golf will remain frustrated or give up completely before mastering the game. Perhaps no sport is more wrought with mental hazards than golf. The game introduces a constant struggle between the conscious mind analyzing, alert, logical, understanding and the subconscious mind that deals with the intuition and the implementation of your long-term memory with regards to the golf swing mechanics.
The constant battle of giving yourself up to time in practicing and the amount of depth for available instructions contributes to golf’s reputation as an intensely mental game. There are volumes of detailed videos and books on the sciences of the game. Golf is a multi-billion dollar industry of golf equipment and one-on-one coaching is considered incomparable to any other sports. Yet all the instructions in the world won’t help you if you allow stress to seep into your game. Even though golf fundamentals are learned in the conscious mind, they are stored in the regions of the subconscious mind. Yet by incorporating elements of yoga into different positions, you can develop the mental discipline that golf demands. The Flow of Concentration.
It’s usually not faulty techniques of the golf swing mechanics but the stress of negative self doubts that disrupts the flow of concentration, and impairs the physical aspects of the game. If you don’t clutter your conscious mind with endless pointers and tips, you make it much easier for your subconscious instincts to guide you. Freeing the subconscious is contingent upon the body’s ability to relax. When you’ve entered a deep state of relaxation, you’re able to experience the “now” and your mind becomes clear. You know how to react or not react by anchoring yourself internally. When your mental chatter quiets down, you’re able to approach your golf game with focus and awareness.
For many, flexibility or fluidity, may be more difficult to achieve than strength and stability. Internal and external stressors can block energy in the body, limiting range of motion and causing your body structure to be off center. An out of balance golf stance may manifest itself into additional strokes that in the long run will cause higher scores. Power, balance and weight transfer all depends on fluidity in the body. These are all energy sources needed to have the ability to properly correct your golf swing mechanics.
When dedicated golfers are making progress, hitting the ball well and feeling on top of their game, they’re considered by their fellow golfers as being ” In The Zone”. A state of being athletes reach where thought is suspended, and focus and concentration are heightened. Many golfers invariably bring in the element of performance pressure and stress causing the zone to rapidly disappear. The conscious mind which is constantly analyzing, now interferes and steps in and begins to over think that their technique is faulty. This is called waking up to the moment or Choking!
They tell themselves they have to practice more, swing harder, and correct their imperfections. This is not to say that you can ignore the physical aspect of the game. There’s always a need to practice, learn the fundamentals, and focus on techniques. However, there also comes a time to let it all go and let the subconscious mind to take over, allowing for hours of practice and experience to come through. Long-term memories will flow through you. Then you can move beyond logical thinking to intuitive, think less action. A clear mind state accessible through the intuitive subconscious.
In order to reach the mental peak of your golf game, you need the instrument of your body to be fine tuned. A strong, stable body that is fluid and flexible creates the foundation for a healthy, injury free athlete. Call on your yoga practice to help you connect with the body, breath and fine spirit. Allow for the various sensations that occur at each moment. Observe your breath to invite feelings of non-attachment, non-judgment, and presence. Pay close attention to physical sensations, pain and stiffness, or ease of movement, using the body like a ground wire for the mind.
Always striving toward symmetry and balance is the key essence of a great yoga program. The program will break down tension the body has learned to work around. Due to the fact that golfers swing from one side of the body, there is asymmetry inherent in the golf game. Over training and repetitive motion manifests as larger muscles on one side of a golfer’s body, specifically, the shoulders, biceps, forearms, and upper back will be more developed on a golfer’s dominant side. These stronger muscles are also tighter, while the weaker muscles are more flexible. The tight muscles in turn will restrict the free movement of surrounding muscles, and ultimately lead to limited range of motion.
It is an intuitive process that takes practice to develop, much like a good golf game. By constant repetitive practicing and being present in the process, you can play a better golf game in the long run. A symmetrical golf swing is not only going to be more accurate and go farther, it is also going to produce less strain on the body. To create more equality on both sides of the body, golfers need to hold strengthening poses on the weaker side of the body and opening poses on the stronger, yet tighter, side of the body. This is in addition to a regular yoga program of poses performed equally on both sides. A balanced body is a flexible body, and flexibility remains the cornerstone of a good golf game.
