Improve Your Golf Mindset In Order To Break 90.
October 6, 2010 by Parshooters
As my 2010 golfing season is coming to a fast close, I can reflect back on this year as not being a good year scoring wise. I have to admit it has been a very long time that I have averaged in the low 90′s for anyone golfing season. Sure I have my excuses of not playing more than once a week, or committed no time to practicing my golf swing mechanics. The very things I write about in my posts, and have the audacity to not do what I’m trying to get my readers to understand and implement in their own improvement to changes in their golf swing mechanics. For that I’m Sorry!
Most golfers who struggle to break ninety are relatively experienced and have been playing for quite a while. Any golfer who has been playing for some time will have developed certain swing characteristics that will shape the flight of their golf shots. In most cases, those trying to break 90, it will mean you’ll have developed a cut spin or slice. Most golfers who cut the ball will dislike the flight of their shots and do everything possible to change their golf swing to hit a draw. One of the most important things to consider when trying to break 90, is learn to live with your golf swing mechanics and not fight it.
How Do You Break 90? In order to break 90, any flight of the golf ball is acceptable as long as it remains consistent. What is required is a good short game, and golf course management. Learning to place your shots on each hole for optimal results. Knowing when to gamble and take risks, and knowing when to play smart conservative golf shots. The key to breaking 90 is to make sure you don’t take more than bogey on any given hole. Eliminate the double and triple bogeys, because they are golf score killers. However, mistakes do happen that will ruin your chances of shooting less than 90. You do need to find a way of eliminating those 3-4 wasted strokes from your golf round immediately. This is known as your wheels coming off, because it hits you, when your not expecting those mishits from happening. If your target is to break 90, you do have the ability to do so. What you need to do is learn how to make the most out of your golf game. This does take time and patience. The best way to speed up your developing or learning curve is by putting in the time too practice.
Golf Course Management. Strategizing is a huge part of scoring well on any golf course. Knowing there are bunkers, water hazards, out of bounds, and trees waiting on almost every hole. You need to be able to find your way around the golf course and stay out of trouble. It’s not always depending upon luck, but course strategy and patience. It definitely helps to have knowledge of the golf course your playing on. The golf course will dictate what you can and can’t do, and you need to live with it. Don’t get frustrated by having to layup when water is in play. Keep in mind that golf courses have been designed to suck you into their trouble spots. Knowledge is King. Knowing where the obstacles are and the yardages from tee to green is paramount to good scoring. That is why playing a particular golf course a few times will give you an idea to where the bunkers are, how deep the greens are, how fast the putts will go, breaks and slopes in the greens, which holes play tougher than they look. Don’t try to become a superhero and smash all of your drives 250+, or make the incredible shot over water.
Short Game. If you are shooting in the mid to high 90′s most of the time, you are probably losing shots around the greens. It might well be that your walking off the golf course wishing you had driven the ball better, but the actual reason you missed your target of breaking 90, was the six three putt greens. Learn to get up and down in two from anywhere around the green. Chipping, pitching and putting is the most underrated part of the golf game. It’s the least amount practiced, and most golfers don’t realize how many strokes are actually being used in a round of golf versus anything else their doing. The average length putt that a 20 handicapper faces on his first putt is about 25 feet or longer. This is due to hitting from the fairway, or from bad chipping and pitching flaws. This attributes to more 3 putt greens, because of self doubts of being able to lag the putt close enough to the hole. Putting is more about skill and touch than shear power and strength like driving the golf ball. That’s partially why golf is such a great game. A power hitter can still lose to a consistent 80 year old that doesn’t play beyond himself. Take a putting lesson to get some basics on speed, distance, and green reading. Work on your putting more than any other part of your golf game!
Avoiding Troubled Hazards. Most golfers who shoot in the 90′s seem to find it. Their golf mindset isn’t capable of getting beyond those hazards in front of them. They tell their brains to avoid the hazard at all cost, but unfortunately that is their last thought before hitting. You need to find positive thoughts before each golf shot. Learn to become more confident that your golf shot will clear the water or stay away from the trees. By trusting in your own ability to produce that certain golf swing, you’ll begin to gain that self-confidence that has been lacking.
Buying New Golf Equipment. There is two major distinctions with regards to high handicappers. They are passionate about improving their golf game, and the intensive desire for more distance. These are obviously major goals and the source of major frustration for most golfers. The golfing industry knows this and why it’s an $8 billion industry that profits from those desires. This push for distance is a huge mental barrier. Those golfers who progress faster with their golf games are the same ones who have discovered how to overcome this mental obstruction. It’s not the new $600 driver to get your drives beyond 230 yards that will make a huge difference to your golf scores. It’s all about knowing your own strengths and weaknesses in your golf swing mechanics. It’s understanding what to do next in order to make the necessary changes, and how to implement those changes in order to improve upon your golf swing mechanics. It’s not about buying those new shiny brand of bells and whistles, but learning how to play within yourself that makes the difference. Talk to those same golfers 6 months after their big investment into golf equipment, and many of them will tell you that it made very little difference to their golf scores.
Metal Approach. Your golf mindset is everything. It’s based upon your attitude and how focused you are that day. If you can learn to keep the ball in play off the tee box and get a 200+ yard drive, there is no reason why you can’t be breaking 90 every once in a while. Become a better thinker on the golf course. Bring positive thoughts to your mindset before hitting that golf ball, it can do wonders. Concentrate on what you can control. Visualize what your seeing and thinking. Don’t think too much about clearing lakes or streams off the tee, you’ll often end up in them. Concentrate only on your immediate golf shot, knowing that if you hit it normal, it will go the distance and carry whatever is in the way. Breaking 90 is usually not something related to strength, it has to do with emotional and mental stability. Work on getting a consistent golf swing out at the driving range, and then take a better mental approach when on the golf course. A few rounds of better thinking will surely put you in position to score below 90.
In order to break 90, you do need an honest break down of how you are compiling your typical scores. Golf can be an incredibly deceptive game and seeing your stats in black and white can be quite an eye opener. I play with several guys who can’t break 90 very often and they usually lose their strokes with bad fairway play. Around the greens they are fairly solid, but they are not long hitters and their approach shots get them into trouble. Make the mental shift to thinking more on how to improve consistency by swinging well within your distance capabilities and your scores will drop significantly in a short period of time.

Krishnamurti that pertains to your blog, please don’t take offense. “You assume that there is such a thing as truth, you assume that there is such a thing as reality (ultimate or otherwise) – it is that assumption that is creating the problem, the suffering for you.”

My golf game is average at best today. I’ve been playing this game for over 40 years. I have played close to par in my younger days and I have been witness to some great shot making, which includes my own and others. I have caddied for both the L.P.G.A. and P.G.A. tour players in my early 20′s. I still know some local and national top amateur and professional players. That’s why I feel that I can write about breaking par, shooting in the 70′s,80′s,90′s and 100′s. I also get my information from others like Booby Eldridge and his videos at; Purepoint Golf.com
