Will Using The Single Plane Swing Improve Your Golf Swing?

The golf swing is the most over analyzed athletic motion in all of sports. Millions of dollars every year is spent developing new technologies in an attempt to improve your golf swing deficiencies. For years, information on the single plane swing has been scarcely available to the general public’s knowledge. If you’ve been playing golf long enough, you’ve realized that there is something missing in your own golf swing. Some days it’s good, but most days it’s really bad. You go from one swing tip to the next, but nothing ever works for more than a couple of golf rounds.
With the single plane you don’t just use your arms and shoulders in regards to using the same swing plane. It’s a golf swing where the mind and body work together on the same swing plane. It’s the easiest golf swing to memorize. It not only will fix any bad swing faults you might have, but you’ll find that you have more accuracy and control over any golf shot you ever wanted to master. It’s also a proven fact that using this swing by older golfers, there is a lot less pulled muscles and strains. Senior golfers can now enjoy playing a lot longer into their twilight years.
It’s not a secret that with age comes a decline in physical capabilities especially in your golf flexibility. The biggest and most noticeable changes is in the backswing. This can rob you of massive yards off the tee, and the golf swing flaws will occur due to lack of flexibility in your hips. The end results caused by bad swing flaws is hooking or slicing of the golf ball. For most golfers this will happen to all of us during a golf round where we have no idea what happened or where the bad swing flaw started? Swinging from over the top is a downswing movement with the upper body getting way ahead of the lower body. During my last two golf rounds this smothering of tee shots has happened too me as well, because physically I’ve not been working on my conditioning and strengthening workout programs.
How many times have you been the shortest hitter off the tee? What is the main cause for an ever shortening backswing? The golf swing is a rotational movement, it is critical to be able to turn your shoulders at least 90 degrees, while your hips only turn 45 degrees. This is impossible if you have physical limitations in your torso and upper body. Main golf swing flaws will occur due to lack of flexibility in your hips. At the top of your backswing, you’ll have very little turn in your hips and shoulders. This poor position will cause your right leg to become inhibited, and not produce the power to drive through your downswing. It is so lacking in dynamics that the beginning of your downswing looks almost like your takeaway. Hip swaying hinders your hip rotation. Swaying of the hips causes a chain reaction of improper balance that effects your total golf swing. So as you can imagine, you can’t do anything but lift your arms and shoulders. This causes a very steep backswing plane and eventually a very steep downswing plane. If your shoulders could only turn back a couple of inches, then your problem with lack of distance off the tee could be improved.
Swinging over the top in your golf swing can cause a whole host of swing faults. If you are hitting a bad slice or some smothering pulls, the problem may well be that you are lunging at the ball and not keeping your head behind the ball. However, it’s likely you are making some other mistakes, probably with your grip and alignment. Keeping your head behind the ball at impact, especially with your driver, will take the really poor swings out of your game. However, many swing faults cannot be fixed until you address this fatal downswing movement in your golf swing. When it comes to later holes, and the physical tiredness feeling creeps into your golfing mindset, you’ll begin to press for that extra distance. Your timing goes first, off-track from your regular tempo. It is sometimes impossible for golfers to fix this on their own. Are these faults caused by changes in your golf swing or from a physical feel standpoint?
A pulled hook will go left instead of going right like the pull slice. It starts left and goes even more left with a hook ball flight. This is caused by a closed clubface at impact. The compensation will be to hold on at impact, not releasing the club causing a block right or slice. A pull goes left on a straight line, and keeps going on that line the entire way. This ball flight is hit with a square clubface, but again with the over the top golf swing. Making sure your alignment is parallel to your target line may fix this immediately. At least with this ball flight, you know where the ball will land.
The correct movement should be the initial movement in the downswing. In coordination with the shoulders your weight shifting should be happening in the lower body. One of the main causes of this swing fault is lack of strength in your core area. If your core is not strong enough, you will not be able to keep your upper body inactive at the start of the golf swing. That is why for many golfers, it is much easier physically to just have the upper body doing most of the work for you. This results in more hand and arm swinging in conjunction with your shoulders doing most of the rotational movement. With just a couple of simple exercises for your core, you can dramatically improve this situation. With this new found core strength, you’ll be able to initiate the downswing with your lower body, while keeping your upper body and shoulders from prematurely coming over the top.
In order to improve your golf swing, you need to attempt to match the arms and shoulder planes throughout the swing, rather than trying to match them up during just the downswing. A golf swing that relies far less on timing and synchronizing, and employs a more natural rotary swinging motion. This single plane swing has been followed very closely by Ben Hogan in his book, “The Five Fundamentals of Golf.” There are many great examples of single plane golfers today on the P.G.A. Tour. Tiger Woods spent most of 2004 converting to a single plane swing with the help of Hank Haney.

I agree that the one plane swing is the one to perfect. It amazes me watching slow motion video of the PGA Tour players that use a two plane swing, how they manage to make square contact after all their adjustments and compensation moves in the downswing.
This simple swing can save you strokes, but for older golfers, it will reduce the pulled and strained muscles you will feel by over-swinging. Especially this is true during early spring and late fall as the weather conditions changes. I know personally, I can’t swing the same way when it’s bitter cold outside, and your bundled up in layer of clothes.
